Eating Right

60 Seconds to better health…a message from Kaiser Permanente

Your grandmother was right, you are what you eat.  That’s why making the right food choices is essential for a healthier life.  But what exactly are the right food choices?

Eat six to eight servings of grains a day.  Grains include breads, cereals, rice and pasta. 

Fruits and vegetables provide vitamins, minerals and fiber.  Have five or more servings of vegetables a day and two servings of fruit a day.

A good rule of thumb for fruits and vegetables is to eat a variety of bright colors, they tend be high in vitamins.

Stick to two to three servings of milk, yogurt and cheese a day. 

Get two to three servings of meat and beans a day, but try getting more protein from nonanimal sources like beans, tofu, nuts and seeds.

Limit your intake of fats, oils and sweets to no more than 30 percent of your total calories per day. 

The best way to fit all the food groups into your busy schedule is to plan ahead.  Try making small changes at first and go easy on yourself.
