The 20 Gallon Challenge

Sophie@103.7 and the San Diego County Water Authority encourage all San Diegans to do their part to help conserve water. We are in the middle of a drought, and our water is in short supply. Saving water should be a year-round habit. Here are some easy water saving tips that can also save you money:
  • Make sure to shut off sprinklers when it is raining
  • Shorten watering times in gardens during the winter months
  • Water lawns only when it is needs and before 6am or after 6pm
  • Install water-saving devices around your home included low-flow showerheads

We need to save more water now because some of the imported water supplies our region relies on have been cut. The 20-Gallon Challenge is a call to San Diegans to Save Water Now. Sophie@103.7 is partnering with the San Diego County Water Authority and 10News to educate San Diego about the critical need to save water.

Reduce outdoor waste. More than half of all urban water use in San Diego County is outdoors, and many people overwater their yards without realizing it.

Cut back on watering the yard. Skipping just one day a week can save hundreds of gallons each time. Also, try watering it for 2 minutes less, and only watering before 6am or after 8pm.

Use a broom, not a hose. Clean off driveways and sidewalks with a broom, and save the water.

Adjust your sprinklers. Make sure your sprinklers aren't watering the street, sidewalk, or your house!

Take advantage of incentives. Save water by taking advantage of incentives offered by the Water Authority, and upgrade your landscape with more efficient irrigation products.

Always wash a full load. You should always make sure to run a full load in your dishwasher or washing machine. You can also save water by not leaving the water running while hand-washing dishes.

Turn it off while you brush. You can turn off the faucet while you brush your teeth to save water. Also, try taking a shower for 2 minutes shorter than usual.

Keep things working smoothly. Be sure to fix leaky toilets, faucets or pipes.
