It’s called “the silent disease.” For years, it thins and weakens your bones with few, if any, warning signs. This condition is called osteoporosis, and more than 10 million Americans have it.
The good news? Osteoporosis is treatable—and even preventable.
Your best bet for detecting osteoporosis early on is a bone mineral density test. A BMD test can determine your rate of bone loss, and assess your risk of a future fracture.
The earlier you work to prevent osteoporosis, the better. Eat smart and don’t forget your calcium.
It’s wise to exercise regularly—no matter what your age. Your bones can become thicker and stronger with exercise. Talk to your physician before you begin any exercise program.
If you smoke, quit, and drink in moderation, if at all.
